What are Spider and Varicose Veins?
Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, are small, sunburst-like blood vessels that are blue, red, or purple in color and usually highly visible. They appear primarily on the legs, but may also appear on the face and elsewhere on the body. Spider veins do not actually serve a physiological purpose, so they can be treated and removed without posing a health problem. Varicose veins are larger dilated blood vessels that may be raised above the surface of the skin and often occur in conjunction with spider veins. What spider veins and varicose veins have in common is that they are unwanted, unattractive, and unnecessary. And most importantly, Dr. Kelleher at The Advanced Cosmetic Laser & Surgery Center offers state-of-the-art outpatient office treatment for the removal of spider and varicose veins.
Varicose Veins may also be a Health Risk.
Large varicose veins (larger than 3-4 mm in diameter) may encourage spontaneous phlebitis or thrombosis, along with the associated risk of possible pulmonary embolism. In addition, large skin ulcerations may develop in the ankle region of patients with long-term varicose veins with underlying venous insufficiency. Rarely, these ulcers may hemorrhage or become cancerous. Varicose veins are not only unsightly, they may also cause significant medical problems. |

How are Spider and Varicose Veins Removed?
Sclerotherapy and Ambulatory Phlebectomy are the medical procedures Dr. Kelleher uses to remove spider and varicose veins. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure in which a sclerosing solution is injected into the spider or varicose vein. The treated vein then becomes progressively less noticeable or invisible over a period of weeks. Patients can resume normal activities immediately, and walking is encouraged after treatment, because it increases blood flow through the other veins.
Spider veins respond extremely well to Sclerotherapy, and most varicose veins will also respond to sclerotherapy. However, for larger varicose veins, Ambulatory Phlebectomy is an excellent choice. In this procedure, the varicose veins are removed through microincisions made in the skin. The incisions are so small (2mm) that they require no sutures and close up by themselves once the procedure is completed.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy achieves the desired results with little discomfort and under local anesthesia. No hospital stay is required, and most patients can return to normal activities within hours. Compared to traditional vein stripping, the micro-incision procedure does not require the use of general anesthetic and produces virtually no scarring. The large scars that typically result from traditional vein stripping are literally reduced to pinpoint size. |

Laser Treatment of Spider Veins
Although the gold standard for the treatment of spider veins of the legs is Sclerotherapy, lasers are a valuable additional treatment. Lasers are particularly helpful in treating the very smallest spider veins which occasionally do not respond to Sclerotherapy. Lasers currently play no role in the treatment of varicose veins.
Lasers are clearly the treatment of choice for the removal of spider veins and redness of the face. For additional information on this, please see our brochures entitled The Laser Treatment of Facial Redness and Facial Spider Veins, and The Laser Treatment of Rosacea. |
