The Laser Treatment of Rosacea

What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic disease that causes redness and an acne-like appearance of facial skin. A continued regimen of medication used to be the only treatment available for rosacea. But in most cases, therapy using only medications has limited effectiveness. The good news is that laser treatment produces dramatic results. The V-Star™, V-Beam laser, KTP laser, and Aura I laser are the most effective tools available for the treatment of facial redness, spider veins and rosacea. These treatments are gentle, minimally uncomfortable, and have no downtime. And as an added bonus, laser treatment of rosacea decreases the need for medication and lessens the acne component of rosacea.
How to Determine if you have Rosacea.
Rosacea may be hard to recognize in its early stages. Many people mistake rosacea for a sunburn, a complexion change or acne. A tendency to blush is the first indication of susceptibility to the later development of rosacea. Rosacea usually starts with what appears to be just rosy cheeks, and because rosy cheeks are considered attractive, many people ignore the condition. This is a mistake in that rosacea will typically worsen and progress to include one or more additional symptoms and parts of the face.

Small red bumps, the appearance of tiny blood vessels (telangiectasias) on the surface of the skin and facial redness (erythema) are all symptoms of rosacea. In more advanced cases, the nose may become enlarged, red and have a bulbous appearance. This condition, called rhinophyma, can also be treated with lasers. Even though facial redness may come and go on its own, you should consult a doctor if you suspect that you have rosacea. Rosacea rarely heals without medical intervention and delaying treatment almost always causes the condition to worsen.

People at risk for developing rosacea are fair-skinned adults, especially those who have a history of blushing. But rosacea can effect any skin type at any age. Women get rosacea more often than men, but men are more likely to develop rhinophyma. The most notable example of someone with rhinophyma is the late comedian W.C. Fields.
Treatment of Rosacea
As with many diseases, early diagnosis and treatment are key to managing the symptoms of rosacea. Many people have rosacea, but do not recognize it in its early stages. Because over the counter remedies may actually make the condition worse, self-treatment should be avoided. Laser treatment is now widely considered to be the best treatment available for many of the symptoms of rosacea. Laser therapy requires no downtime and produces superior results.

Most specifically, the V-Star™ laser and V beam laser are the most effective treatment for the troubling and unsightly facial redness caused by rosacea. Additionally, the severe facial spider veins caused by rosacea are optimally eliminated by the KTP laser and Aura I. Finally, the advanced condition of rhinophyma can be dramatically improved with the Sciton Contour™2 laser. The combination of these three lasers is available in the entire Chicago area only at The Advanced Cosmetic Laser & Surgery Center.
