The Laser Removal of Scars

Scars can be unattractive.
They can also be painful reminders of unfortunate accidents, injuries or disease. However, you no longer have to feel self-conscious or embarrassed about unsightly scars. With laser scar reduction, and the expertise of the physicians at the Advanced Cosmetic Laser and Surgery Center, you can greatly reduce the appearance of scars. Our skilled physicians can alter the length, width, direction, color, and texture of a scar. They can even lower elevated scars and raise depressed scars. By using a combination of advanced techniques and state-of-the-art lasers – the ScitonTM Contour Erbium Laser and the V-StarTM Laser – the physicians of the Advanced Cosmetic Laser and Surgery Center will help you achieve smoother, more attractive skin with less conspicuous scarring.

What is a scar?
A scar is part of the body’s healing process -- the result of the skin repairing itself after a wound. As the skin heals, thick, bundled collagen grows in place of the wound, resulting in a scar. Depending on the type of wound, a scar could be raised, depressed, pitted, discolored, long, or wide. Over time, scars may improve to various degrees, sometimes leaving a small mark; however, most will remain permanently noticeable. Most types of scars may be improved with laser scar reduction:
• Acne scars
• Traumatic scars
• Surgical scars
• Chicken pox scars
• Raised scars and keloids
• Stretch marks
• Red, inflamed scars
The ScitonTM Contour Erbium Laser

The Advanced Cosmetic Laser and Surgery Center has the only ScitonTM Contour Erbium Laser in the entire Chicagoland area. By using a combination of new laser technologies, the ScitonTM Contour Erbium Laser is the single most effective tool in laser scar reduction, allowing the surgeon to reshape or sculpt your skin. As the laser passes over your skin, a gentle beam of light accurately vaporizes a thin layer of tissue, causing new, younger looking skin to grow. This procedure produces dramatic results for most types of scars, including both elevated scars and acne scars. Elevated scars can be flattened with pinpoint accuracy; depressed or pitted scars may be beveled down and smoothed out. No other tool allows an experienced laser surgeon to reshape your skin with greater accuracy and precision. Additionally, the laser vaporizes thickly bundled collagen within the scar, allowing your body to re-heal the wound with new, more normal, and cosmetically superior collagen. Not only does this produce a dramatic improvement in scars, it also has maximum effects on sun damage, aging, and wrinkles.

The V-Star™ Laser
The V-Star™ laser is an exciting new development in laser scar reduction, providing “no downtime” laser scar therapy. The laser light painlessly passes through the upper layer of skin, gently stimulating collagen growth within the deeper layers, leading to an elevation of depressed and pitted scars. The V-Star™ Laser is also efficient at thinning thick scars, reducing scar redness, and improving overall skin tone and texture. Not only is the V-Star™ a breakthrough development in laser scar reduction, but also extremely effective at treating rosacea, facial redness, spider veins, wrinkles, sun damage, and stretch marks. V-Star™ Laser treatments take seconds to minutes, are essentially painless, create no wound, and have no visible side-effects. This revolutionary technology allows for the most gentle, safe, and effective treatment of scars and is only available at the Advanced Cosmetic Laser and Surgery Center.
The Smoothbeam™ Laser and the CoolTouch II™ Laser

These lasers are the most powerful tools for noninvasively stimulating new collagen growth. Both of these devices are deep penetrating infrared lasers. Their powerful laser energy is absorbed deep in the dermis and stimulates the dermal fibroblasts to produce new collagen. This leads to a gradual but significant and reliable improvement in scars and wrinkles. These lasers are most effective on atrophic or depressed scars. They will also noticeably improve the overall tone and texture of scar tissue. This process is referred to as "collagen remodeling". These two lasers are the most powerful tools available for noninvasively stimulating collagen remodeling. These treatments have no visible side effects other than transient redness and have truly "no downtime".

Multiple Procedures in Laser Scar Reduction.

There are many types of scars that will often best respond to other procedures performed in addition to, or in conjunction with laser scar surgery:
• Skin grafting for deeply pitted acne scars
• Collagen injections and fat transplants for depressed scars
• Excision and revision before laser treatment
• Subcission of depressed scars
• Microdermabrasion
Our experienced physicians are experts in all the above mentioned procedures, utilizing the most appropriate and effective combinations for the most dramatic results.
