Laser Treatment of Acne

Laser and Photodynamic Therapy of acne and acne scarring
Acne is the most common skin disease and affects millions of people in this country. It is particularly troubling because this disfiguring condition largely afflicts people during their teenage years, the time of life when appearance and the development of self-esteem are most critical. Acne also often affects young adults, particularly women between the ages of 20 and 40. Young men and women usually find facial acne limiting, both socially and in their careers. Most distressing, acne can lead to scarring, frequently severely disfiguring, that will last as a life long re Color minder of their acne.

One of the most exciting and rapid areas of development in dermatology and cosmetic laser surgery is the use of lasers and photodynamic therapy to treat acne and acne scarring.

Laser and Photodynamic Therapy for acne
Unfortunately, many patients do not respond well to conventional medical treatment of acne. Others cannot tolerate the topical and oral medicines commonly used. Women in their childbearing years must often avoid most of these medicines. Many people want to avoid potential side effects of systemic drugs, particularly accutane. For many of these patients, laser and photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a safe, easy, and effective answer to their acne. Lasers and non-laser light devices can get to the root causes of acne by "turning off" the oil glands that cause acne and destroying the acne causing bacteria on your skin and in your pores. PDT entails the application of a medicine to the skin prior to laser or light treatment. This medicine is activated by certain colors of light and significantly enhances the effect of the laser on your skin. This leads to more complete and rapid clearing in less treatments.
Laser treatment of acne scarring
Unfortunately, scarring is an all too frequent complication of acne. Fortunately, the use of lasers and minimally invasive surgical techniques are Dr. Matthew R. Kelleher’s area of greatest interest and expertise. "Through our expertise in lasers, minimally invasive skin surgery, fillers, and fat transplantation, incredible improvements in acne and non-acne scars are not only possible, but are common. There are no other patients I find more rewarding or enjoyable to treat".

Lasers can elevate depressed scars and flatten thick scars. Excess redness can be removed. Skin tone and texture can be improved. Most of these treatments are minimally uncomfortable and have no downtime.
